Stimulating ONWARD (Episode 123)

Guest: Chet Moritz
Today’s guest is Dr. Chet Moritz. Chet is the CJ and Elizabeth Hwang endowed professor in the departments Electrical and Computer Engineering, Rehabilitation Medicine and Neurobiology & Biophysics at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle. He also serves as the Co-director for the Center for Neurotechnology. Chet’s work in Transcutaneous Spinal Stimulation (TSS) contributed heavily to ONWARD Medical's Arc-EX device which recently gained FDA approval.
We discuss Chet’s research, his history and connections in the TSS community, the role that his lab played in the success of ONWARD Medical and what is on the horizon.

Guest Bio
Chet Moritz received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, studying the neuromechanics of human movement. A post-doc at the University of Colorado introduced him to the neural control of dexterous hand movements, while a second post-doc at the University of Washington began his interest in brain computer interfaces and neural devices to treat paralysis. He is now the CJ and Elizabeth Hwang endowed professor in the departments Electrical and Computer Engineering, Rehabilitation Medicine and Neurobiology & Biophysics at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle. He also serves as the Co-director for the Center for Neurotechnology, a graduated NSF Engineering Research Center. He and his research team focus on developing and testing novel neurotechnologies to restore movement, reduce spasticity, and improve autonomic function for people with spinal cord injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and children with cerebral palsy.
